Patterns of ice flow across SE Caithness
The pioneer mapping of Peach and Horne (1881) has never been superseded, although significant additions of information have been made. Striations indicate a simple movement of ice off the Helmsdale Granite into the Moray Firth and along the upper and middle parts of the main valleys. From Berriedale northwards, however, more complex patterns emerge and reflection the incursion of ice from the Moray Firth and the shouldering aside of the inland ice into a parallel flow. A possible late movement of Moray Firth ice along the coast is suggested by striae and erratics. |
